YORK City were held to a 0-0 draw on their return to the LNER Community Stadium against Eastleigh.

Adam Hinshelwood’s side extended their unbeaten run to seven, also securing an incredible fourth straight clean sheet and an eighth of the season.

Eastleigh had the better of the chances in the first-half as Paul McCallum dragged a strike wide from Jake Vokins’ cross, but not before Chris Maguire was thwarted from close-range by Harrison Male.

York showed more of what they are capable of in the second-half as Ollie Pearce met a teasing cross from Dipo Akinyemi, but missed the target by inches from inside the six-yard box.

City remain in second position on 25 points from their opening 12 matches, just two points shy of Barnet at the top, who defeated AFC Fylde 2-0 today.

Both sides headed into the contest having led the league at one point in this season, with Eastleigh enjoying a strong start, before slightly dropping off in recent weeks.

Kelvin Davies’ side had gone unbeaten in their opening five matches, before Gateshead inflicted a first defeat of the season on Eastleigh.

A run of just two wins in their next five has seen the Spitfires drop to seventh position on goal difference, four points adrift of York prior to kick-off.

City had enjoyed a best start to the season since the 1992/93 campaign, with five victories from their last six, and a hugely impressive three points earned in midweek.

A brace from Tyrese Sinclair, paired by an opener from Ashley Nathaniel-George, had gifted the Minstermen a 3-0 victory at Solihull Moors.

The one casualty from that match was to winger Nathaniel-George, who suffered a minor hamstring injury and dropped out of the squad for today’s match.

Sinclair was Nathaniel-George’s replacement in the line-up as York’s only change, with Joe Felix again starting in midfield.

Dan Batty did return to the bench after missing out on City’s last three fixtures, with youngster Mo Fadera also amongst the subs.

Eastleigh opted to name an unchanged eleven that drew 2-2 with Woking in midweek, which came as a relief to their supporters, as it meant that Paul McCallum retained his spot in the squad.

McCallum had been substituted off in Eastleigh’s midweek draw with the Cardinals through a knock, but recovered in time for the Spitfires’ visit tot North Yorkshire.

Goalkeeper Joe McDonnell also made his 200th appearance for the club, with defender Ludwig Francillette marking his 50th outing for Eastleigh.

The Eastleigh goalkeeper would be involved early on, as a bright start from York saw Cameron John lay the ball back to Sinclair, whose curling strike was smothered by McDonnell.

City were left frustrated ten minutes in as Ollie Pearce went down under the challenge of Francillette, but was adjudged to have dived and yellow carded by referee Zac Kennard-Kettle.

Both John and Chris Maguire had strikes fail to threaten the opposition goalkeeper.

But Male would have to show his quality if he was to achieve a sixth clean sheet of the season, as Maguire wriggled his way into the City area, before his low strike was brilliantly parried by the York shot-stopper.

York paid their tributes to supporter Connor Abbott in the 23rd minute, the City fan who sadly passed away this week with a minute's applause.

Eastleigh enjoyed a period of pressure as the first-half drew to a close, with McCallum first lashing an effort wide from Jake Vokins’ cross, before heading wide from close-range after meeting a delivery by Tyrese Shade.

It all felt a bit stale at half-time, with Hinshelwood keen to inject some more eagerness into his side for the second 45.

City started quick, with Akinyemi first seeing an ambitious strike float over the bar, before Sinclair curled an effort into the back of the South Stand.

Akinyemi soon attempted an audacious volley that was struck sweetly, but evaded the target.

The second-half entered the quiet period, before Pearce drew a solid stop from McDonnell.

York were left in disbelief as they came their closest in the contest, with Akinyemi again beating Jai Semenyo on the wing and reaching the byline before pulling a low cross into the six-yard area.

Pearce rushed onto the inviting cross, but wasn’t able to direct his side-footed strike on target from close-range.

Hinshelwood looked to add more flair to his attack, with Felix playing at right-wing for large portions of the second-half, by introducing Callum Harriott and Lenell John-Lewis from the bench.

The former almost found a breakthrough with another Akinyemi cross reaching Harriott in the area, but his strike on the turn was bravely blocked, and the danger was cleared.

York would pile the pressure on Eastleigh in the closing stages, but couldn’t find their breakthrough, as City were frustrated to a goalless draw against Eastleigh.

York are back in action next Saturday for their visit to Woking (5.30pm), and will find out their Emirates FA Cup fourth qualifying round opponents on Monday.
