EMILY SENIOR's tenure in charge of York City Ladies began with a 5-2 victory over Fleetwood Town Wrens.

York advanced to the first round proper of the Adobe Women's FA Cup after braces from both Faye Singleton and Grace Sykes, paired by a strike from Ruby Gore, overcame Fleetwood in North Yorkshire.

It was Senior's first match in charge after her appointment was announced in midweek, with City beginning a new era under their new management team.

Speaking on the victory, Senior told club media: "It was always going to be a bit of an interesting one, it's a brand new start for the girls and we're asking for new things from players.

"They are just getting to know us, it's completely different opposition that they don't normally come up against.

"It was always going to be a strange one for the team today.

"We're into the next round and that's the most important thing, they got over the line and there were some great bits of play to do that."

Fleetwood, who play their football at a level lower than York, provided an early shock as Kris Boos curled an impressive finish past Becky Sidwell.

Katie Astle was denied by a superb stop from Libby Walmsley, but the Minsterbelles wouldn't be behind for long.

Singleton attempted an audacious strike from a wide angle, beating Walmsley.

Just ten minutes later, City found themselves in front as Gore netted with a composed finish into the bottom corner.

And in quick succession, York took a 3-1 lead as Singleton bagged her brace.

Sidwell was called into action to keep out Boos, but on the brink of half-time the Wrens attacker narrowed the deficit as a nice move in the area ended with Boos sliding past the York goalkeeper.

A quiet period lasted until the 88th minute, as substitute Sykes scored just one minute after entering the frame, finishing from a wide position.

And just two minutes later, she took her tally to two after meeting a low cross Singleton, slotting past Walmsley to secure the result.
