THE best is still to come from the York Knights this season, believes head coach Andrew Henderson.

It's been a mixed start to the season for the Knights, with the disappointment of just three wins from their nine Betfred Championship matches in a firm contrast to a fantastic run in the sport's cup competitions that has seen them reach the Sixth Round of the Betfred Challenge Cup and the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Semi Final.

York have however been hit with a worsening injury crisis, with up to 12 players unavailable at certain periods so far this season, including the spine of their squad in Ata Hingano, Levi Edwards and Pauli Pauli.

Henderson though has still been impressed by the performances that his squad has delivered, admitting that it is an "exciting" time for the club.

“I suppose if you look at the start of the Championship competition, we’re three wins from nine – it’s not ideal," he reflected.

"I understand that – but we’re two wins out of the top six, that’s the reality.

“There’s two thirds of the competition still to go, so plenty of time to turn that around and get some points on the board and get some momentum to have a really strong finish to that campaign.

“Equally, what is just as exciting, we’re into the final 16 of the Challenge Cup competition, and we’re now in the Semi-Finals of the 1895 Cup competition.

“To say that we still have opportunity in all these Cup competitions at this stage of the season, I think it’s quite incredible really considering all the disruption that we’ve faced as a group and the adversity that we’ve faced as a group.

“I still think that we’re yet to play our best rugby league football, and I’m still yet to think that we’ve probably had our best side out there consistently week in, week out.

“I think that there’s so many positives to look forward to and get excited about and the fact that we’re still alive in all the Cup competitions is a credit to the playing group.

“There’s plenty of opportunity and plenty to play for in the next two-thirds of this season this year, so that’s what I’m focusing on.

“It’d have been nice to have been on a couple more points in the Championship, 100 per cent, but it is what it is and I think that we’re still in a fantastic position to build from it and move forward with."
