AJ TOWSE’s Betfred Super League move to Leigh Leopards has been confirmed.

Towse’s time with the York Knights came to an end after Sunday’s 22-13 defeat to Wakefield Trinity in the Betfred Championship play-off semi-final, with Head Coach Mark Applegarth confirming his exit following the full-time whistle.

The 21-year-old was a standout player for York in the 2024 season, scoring 20 tries in 34 matches and earning a second nomination as the Championship Young Player of the Year in both 2022 and 2023.

He ended his 2023 campaign as the Knights’ top try-scorer, also spending time with Newcastle Thunder in the early stages of 2024 on a dual registration deal.

Formerly of NCL outfit Heworth, York-born Towse was a fans favourite with the Knights having made his professional debut in April 2021, losing 26-0 to Wigan Warriors in a Betfred Challenge Cup tie.

He solidified a regular spot in the York ranks from there, going on to make 67 appearances for the Knights, striking 35 tries in that time.

Towse has penned a three-year contract with Leigh, who finished their Super League season in fifth position on 31 points, reaching the play-off semi-final before losing out 38-0 to eventual Grand Final victors Wigan Warriors.

Speaking on his move to the club, Leigh’s Head of Rugby Chris Chester told club media: “AJ is only 21 but has really impressed at York over the past two seasons.

“He is already a proven try-scorer, and we are expecting big things of him at Leigh Leopards in 2025.”

Towse is one of five players to depart the Knights upon the conclusion of the 2024 season, with Will Jubb, Josh Daley, Nikau Williams and Ronan Michael all also leaving the club.
