DAVE WOODS doesn’t care how York City Knights pick up a win at Dewsbury Rams tomorrow – as long as they do.

The head coach proclaimed he would take an “ugly” victory in the key Co-operative Championship clash at the Tetleys Stadium as his side look to take a step towards survival.

“We need to grind the win out,” said Woods.

“A bloke said to me yesterday ‘I want to win a really good entertaining game’. I said ‘I want to win’. If it is dull, then it is that. An ugly win is better than a flashy loss.

“It is going to be tough going over to their place. They always get good support and play better there.

“But we are confident with what we have been doing the last few weeks and we think we can get a win.

“We have to play our sets right, keep the ball away from them and make them work hard.

“The focus is on our intensity. If we do that then, on our day, we can beat anyone.”

Woods wasn’t naming his squad until after a training session today but said Dennis Tuffour and Brett Waller, who both played in the reserve grade’s 39-22 loss against Oldham on Thursday night at Huntington Stadium, could make the 17.

York will go above Dewsbury in the league ladder with a win and Woods is hoping that, following good performances against top sides in their last three encounters, the Knights can get onto a winning roll with their next two matches at home.

With eight games remaining, tomorrow’s Dewsbury clash is hardly do-or-die.

But Woods, who has enjoyed spectacular promotions as a coach and is now in the relatively unknown position of trying to lead a survival mission, added that coming through this experience successfully could have a big impact on the club.

“You are always learning,” he added. “This year, with us having so many younger blokes, I am having to look at different ways of doing things and different ways of making changes in games.

“I am learning all the time with this experience. We got promoted last year when we should not have, probably. We knew it would be tough and if we can get through this, we will be so much better next year for the experience.

“We have got an opportunity to give a good performance this week and get on a roll and get three wins.

“If we can do that, again, we are going to be so much better for it.”
