REMEMBER the Martyn Miller Bike Ride, the sponsored event organised in memory of the Knights fan and keen cyclist who died of cancer last year aged 42?

You know the one, where money raised was to go towards the Higgo’s 13-a-Side Rugby Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support.

And organisers had initially targeted making about £2,000 for the good causes hoping a few dozen people would take part.

Well, in the end 85 people completed the 30-mile course, and the final total came in this week… a total which amounts to a rather staggering £10,015.56.

That is not a misprint, it really is a five-figure sum, and the two charities really will be getting £5,007.78 each.

For those who don’t know, the Higgo’s Foundation was set up in memory of the York’s rugby league development guru Paul Higgins and gives cash to help out amateur clubs and their young players.

Phil Seymour, a friend of both Martyn and ‘Higgo’, was the main man behind the sponsored bike ride and it was he who counted the money as it came in, and he who revealed the final total on the Facebook page created for the ride.

Seymour, who had proclaimed delight when previously forecasting a grand total of about £4,000, was rather overwhelmed.

He posted: “We have massively exceeded what we set out to raise.

“It’s down to everyone involved. Personally I’m very proud of it all and everyone who was involved.

“I’m sure that wherever he is Martyn will have a huge grin going on… and Paul will be taking the p*** out of me in some way.

“We’ve got to say a massive thank you to everyone who has been involved, from those who have helped to organise it to the volunteers, riders, sponsors... everyone.”
